Qui a dit que le peuple français était un peuple d'assistés? Je pose cette question parce que je viens d'assister à une énième scène qui me fait soupirer.

Au supermarché étatsunien, il y a la caissière (ou le caissier, beaucoup plus d'hommes qu'en France excercent cette profession) et l'employé(e) qui met tes courses dans les sacs (plastic or paper? est LA question) à ta place. Eh oui, ça se passe comme ça ici. Alors ce matin, le mec avait un cadis plein à rabors et alors que le monsieur aux sacs mettaient une éternité à remplir les sacs, eh bien lui il attendait patiemment, alors que tout le monde faisait la queue. Et le caissier n'a guère levé le petit doigt pour aider à mettre les courses dans les sacs.

Ce n'est pas une scène d'exception, ça arrive à chaque fois que je vais au supermarché. Du coup, quand nos politiciens regardent les Etats-Unis avec des étoiles dans les yeux, un pays où l'économie est florissante, où la thune coule à flot, eh bien moi je leur conseillerais de venir vivre dans le pays quelques mois et de goûter directement au rêve étatsunien.

Parce que bien entendu, l'employé(e) préposé(e) aux sacs est le plus souvent mexicain. Et tu parles d'un emploi ! Enfin je veux dire, c'est même pas utile comme job, le caissier/la caissière pourrait très bien s'en charger, ou mieux le client pourrait le faire au lieu d'attendre qu'on lui serve tout sur un plateau d'argent.

Les Etats-Unis et le plein emploi? Peut-être, mais bon, le salaire minimum en Californie est de 7,5$ soit 5,5€ et la vie est chère ici. Et puis ça me fait toujours sourire d'entendre la critique les Français travaillent peu. Certes mais les Etatsuniens ont beau travaillé plus, on produit plus en France. Malgré tout, je suis tout à fait favorable à redorer le blason du mot "travail" (qui en France porte toujours le stigma d'une étymologie latine en lettre de sang - du mot tripalium qui désignait un instrument de torture dans la Rome Antique). Après tout, si je fais des études, c'est pour pouvoir au moins avoir le choix d'un travail qui me plaise. J'ai pas envie de me lever le matin et de traîner les pieds pour aller bosser. J'ai envie d'y aller avec le sourire, plein d'envie, de me dire que je vais avancer, plutôt que d'attendre avec impatience mes prochaines vacances. Mon travail sera ma passion, mon plaisir.

Alors, si les gens veuillent travailler plus (pour gagner plus), soit. Mais pas à n'importe quel prix non plus. La France a un système de protection sociale que l'on doit préserver...

Je suppose que vous avez entendu parler du massacre qui s'est produit en Virginie. Un étudiant armé qui tue 32 personnes sur le campus, avant de se donner la mort.

Les réactions ne se sont pas faites attendre: des groupes ont été crées sur Facebook, bon nombre d'étudiant(e)s ont remplacé leur photo par un bandeau noir en signe de deuil...

Virginia Tech shooter kills 32

Gunman slays two in dormitory, then goes on rampage in classrooms before taking own life

In the aftermath of the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, Virginia Tech students and authorities are searching for information and answers.

On Monday morning, a gunman opened fire in two buildings at Virginia Tech, killing 32 before taking his own life.

As of late Monday evening, several people were still being treated in nearby hospitals, and authorities estimated the total number of wounded to be at least 15.

“I want to (express) my horror and disbelief and ... profound sorrow. I am at a loss for words,” said Virginia Tech President Charles Steger. “It’s a real tragedy.”

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said his department had a preliminary identification of the shooter, but was not releasing his name or confirming whether he was a student.

Authorities said the man entered West Ambler Johnston, a dormitory on campus that houses nearly 900 students, just after 7 a.m., where he killed one man and one woman before leaving.

Flinchum said police had reason to believe the dorm shooting was part of a “domestic dispute.”

About two hours later, the gunman returned to campus and killed 30 people in Norris Hall, an engineering building, before killing himself.

The man opened fire in at least two classrooms where students were in the middle of class, and students and faculty were among the dead, Flinchum said.

Many students reported barricading classroom doors and taking cover under desks after hearing shots fired in the building.

“We forced ourselves against the door so he couldn’t come in again because the door would not lock,” student Erin Sheehan told CNN, adding that the shooter then began firing through the door.

Other students said they jumped out of windows to avoid the gunman, resulting in broken bones and some serious injuries. Students and faculty began carrying out the wounded before ambulances arrived on the scene.

Flinchum said the gunman had apparently chained some doors in Norris Hall shut from the inside.

Video footage taken by a student on his cell phone and broadcast by CNN appears to show police using explosives to force open the doors of the building.

During the video, gunshots within the building are audible.

Police had identified a “person of interest” in connection with the dorm shooting, and were interviewing him when they received word of the second shooting, Flinchum said.

He added that this man was not a student, but did know one of the victims of the dorm shooting.

“I’m not saying there is someone out there, and I’m not saying there is someone who is not,” Flinchum said.

The man was not taken into custody.

Steger said after hearing of the dorm shooting, the university immediately closed West Ambler Johnston.

But the rest of the campus was not locked down until several hours later, after the shooting in Norris Hall had already started.

Flinchum said the university did not immediately lock down the rest of campus because officials believed the gunman had left the area.

“We had some reason to believe he had left campus,” Flinchum said, citing evidence from witnesses. “You can second-guess all day. We acted on the best information we had at the time.”

He added that police were still investigating whether the two shootings were related, though no additional suspects had been taken into custody and he said police were not actively searching for other possible shooters.

But the university faced tough criticism for failing to notify students and lock down the campus sooner.

“I think the university has blood on their hands because of their lack of action after the first incident,” said student Billy Bason, who lives in West Ambler Johnston.

University officials sent out 36,000 e-mails notifying the campus community of the incidents, and activated a resident adviser phone bank to get the word out to on-campus residents, Steger said.

He added that because the shootings happened in the morning when many students, faculty and staff were in the middle of their commutes to campus, notifying the community and securing the campus was especially difficult.

“You’ve got 14,000 people en route,” he said. “Where do you lock them down?”

Robert Bowman, managing editor at the Collegiate Times, Virginia Tech’s student newspaper, said students first received an e-mail regarding the incidents at about 9:15 a.m., and some students were “skeptical” about the time delay.

The e-mail contained minimal information about the first shooting, and encouraged students to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.

Bowman said police remained at every entrance to the campus throughout the afternoon, and it was difficult for non-students to enter the area.

Though classes were cancelled until Wednesday, Bowman said some parts of campus, including dining halls, were back up and running.

“The campus has been a little intense all day,” he said. “Everybody’s still looking for information.”

Steger said the university is still working to identify victims and notify families, and would likely not release a list of names until sometime today.

Police recovered two weapons from the scene, and Bob McDonnell, Virginia’s attorney general, said in an interview with CNN that police were performing ballistics tests on the weapons.

“It appears from the (video) tape ... it was some sort of automatic or semi-automatic weapon,” McDonnell said.

UC President Robert Dynes and UCLA Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams both released statements regarding the incidents.

Abrams said in his statement that UCLA currently has procedures in place to deal with situations like shootings.

“Multiple campus committees work regularly on workplace violence issues. And police officer training includes scenarios involving shootings,” he said in the statement. “In addition, UCLA has an emergency response team and protocols in place to notify the campus community in the event of any circumstances requiring emergency action, such as the closing of the campus.”

But Dynes said all University of California campuses would be reviewing their security procedures in light of the shootings at Virginia Tech.

“At this time, there are a great many questions about the details of what occurred at Virginia Tech and about what sparked this outburst of most extreme violence,” he said in the statement. “As we learn more about the specific circumstances of the Virginia Tech shootings, we will apply those lessons as well.”

During a nationally-televised address Monday afternoon, President Bush said he would make federal resources available to Virginia Tech authorities if needed.

“Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning,” he said. “When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community.”

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine told CNN that Virginia Tech has already “been through a lot” this year.

On the first day of classes this school year, an escaped convict from a local jail shot two Virginia Tech police officers on the campus.

And on Friday, the school received a bomb threat. Police are investigating a possible connection between that threat and Monday’s shootings.

“My heart went out to the community,” Kaine said. “This community has been through a lot ... they’ve been through a difficult time this year already.”

A convocation is set for 2 p.m. EDT today at Virginia Tech to help community members cope with the tragedy.

Students had already begun holding candlelight vigils Monday evening, and more are scheduled for tonight.

“Shock is a wild understatement, and we’re trying to do everything we can for the families,” Steger said. “We have to think very carefully about the process of healing and bringing this community back together.”

Shooter, 23, identified

As details of Virginia Tech shooting surface, UCLA students show an outpouring of sympathy

Police identified the shooter – Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old student – and released some of the names of the victims.

On Monday morning, there were two shootings on the Virginia Tech campus – one at a dormitory and one at a classroom building. Counting Cho, who took his own life, 33 people were killed, including professors and students.

And though UCLA students mostly went about their business as usual on Tuesday, a glance up at the flag flying near Royce Hall or a quick skim of recent updates on Facebook showed that things were not quite normal.

Flags across the nation were lowered to half-mast as per President Bush’s order, a candlelight vigil was planned for Thursday night, and the news of the shooting lingered in students’ thoughts.

“It’s something in the back of your mind – if that can happen at that university, it can happen here as well,” said Shawn Do, a fourth-year statistics and math applied science student.

“All students really relate – a student walked around and killed other students,” he said.

Though investigators did not say for certain that Cho was the shooter in both attacks, they were able to determine that one of the two guns was used both in locations.

Cho, who came to the United States from South Korea in 1992, seems to have had few friends, and even his roommates reported knowing little about him. But several pieces of evidence which are now being viewed as warning signs have surfaced, namely writings some professors and students characterized as disturbing and violent.

One screenplay he wrote about a fight between a stepson and a stepfather included an attack with a chain saw, and another depicted students fantasizing about stalking and killing a teacher who had molested them.

He once turned in a creative writing assignment so disturbing that he had been referred to counseling services, professor Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the Virginia Tech English department, told the Associated Press.

Some of the names of the victims – as well as their stories of heroism – also came out Tuesday.

One of the first people to be killed was Ryan Clark, a member of the marching band and a resident adviser who was shot during the first shooting.

Another victim was a professor, a Holocaust survivor who was apparently killed after he protected students’ lives by blocking the door of his classroom, preventing the gunman from entering.

And another was Emily Jane Hilscher, a freshman who loved animals, especially horses.

Professors at UCLA opened their lectures with words of sympathy for these victims and those who knew them. Many students used Facebook to express their emotions.

Some students changed their profile pictures to the Virginia Tech logo over a black ribbon, and others changed their statuses to include such phrases as “praying for those at Virginia Tech” or “sending ... love out to all those who were affected from the shooting at Virginia Tech.”

Hundreds of Facebook groups were started in the last two days, some at UCLA, expressing sympathy and solidarity.

Nationwide, the shooting has brought up several issues – should lawmakers consider more strict gun-control laws? Should the local police and university have reacted more quickly? Should the perpetrator’s friends and professors have responded to what are now seen as clear warning signs that something was wrong?

But UCLA students focused on two questions – how different is UCLA from Virginia Tech? And what happened during the two hours that passed before the campus was notified of the first shooting?

“What devastates us ... is the two-hour gap between the shootings,” said Lily Huynh, a second-year neuroscience student.

And though Huynh commented that there was really likely no way to prevent such an event as what happened at Virginia Tech on Monday, she was not the only one who expressed concern about the university’s response.

“Why didn’t anyone know about (the shooting)?” asked Angelica Andersson, a second-year economics student. “It could have been prevented.”

But what others focused on was the bond between students at UCLA and students at Virginia Tech.

Jesse Rogel, the chief of staff of the Undergraduate Students Association Council President’s Office, which is planning the vigil, said the event was meant to show support for Virginia Tech, as well as give students at UCLA an opportunity to express their grief.

He said the vigil is tentatively set for 8:00 p.m. on Thursday in De Neve Plaza.

“It’s for everyone on campus to come together and show our respect to Virginia Tech as fellow colleagues,” Rogel said. “We’re all students.”

Voici un extrait d'un essay que j'ai rendu le trimestre dernier pour mon séminaire graduate (j'ai eu un A), que j'ai intitulé The Franco-American War on Culture. J'ai pas mal bouquiné sur le sujet et j'ai été horrifié d'apprendre - grand naïf que je suis - qu'Hollywood avait pour but déclaré de réduire à néant les industries nationales et s'imposer sur tous les continents. La France est le pays qui résiste le mieux grâce à la taxe spéciale (sur chaque ticket acheté, quel que soit le film, un pourcentage nourrit des fonds qui servent à l'aide des films purement français); sur le marché national, les films nationaux oscillent entre 15 et 35% des parts du marché (le reste pour les films étatsuniens), alors que dans la grande majorité des autres pays, la part des films nationaux est le plus souvent inférieure à 10%, même pour des pays cinématographiques qui ont dominé à une période donnée, comme l'Italie ou l'Allemagne.

C'est très français, ce que je vais dire mais la diversité culturelle est l'essence même de l'humanité, et si on doit se battre, on se battra ! La France doit néanmoins être plus aggressive sur le marché étatsunien si elle veut grapiller quelques miettes et commencer à changer les mentalités (car, quoiqu'on dise, les médias façonnent les esprits et si la population étatsunienne ne connaît pas grand-chose des autres pays, c'est parce qu'on ne lui donne pas accès à ces informations); elle doit aussi s'engager fortement dans une coopération européenne de grande envergure.

Let’s end the discussion with the big bone of contention between France and the United States: cinema. The aim here is not to go back over the blatant and declared imperialist view of the United States through the use of their movies around the world – it is a recognized fact and we take it as such. As a matter of fact, Will H. Hays, the head of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), pompously declared in a speech delivered in London in 1923: “We are going to sell America to the world with American motion pictures.[1]” After all,

Members of our Association have taken… definite steps to make certain that every film that goes from America abroad, wherever it shall be sent, shall correctly portray to the world the purposes, the ideals, the accomplishments, the opportunities, and the life of America.

Even more straightforward, the head of the BFDC’s Movie Division stated, in 1939:

Persistently and adroitly, we must make the foreign movie-goer acutely conscious that the American picture is a product of decidedly superior quality – of rich and varied artistry, of entertainment value unmatchable in the run of the mill output of our competitors abroad (…) We must make this high quality factor so universally recognized that local audiences abroad will have no desire to see inferior films that owe their existence simply to some government legislation or subsidy.[2]

Furthermore, President Wilson was well aware that cinema was “the very highest medium for the dissemination of public intelligence, and since it speaks a universal language, it lends itself importantly to the presentation of America’s plans and purposes”[3], an echo to the phrase “what is good for America is good for the whole world.” In a word,

No American industry was more self-consciously rivalrous about its role in shaping international cultural trends, none more engaged in reaching out, responding to, and shaping consumer tastes abroad, none more aggressive in taking on the barriers and obstacles to its installation in other societies [than Hollywood]. Economically, motion pictures were far and away the most remunerative cultural export.[4]

Nowadays, critics and experts seem to have reached the following consensus:

Hollywood did not rely on the popularity of its movies to secure its worldwide dominance, but on monopolistic trade practices and the power of the United States government – primarily through extensive collaboration with the State Department – to coerce foreign governments into abandoning the effectively similar import restrictions on Hollywood films that were privately applied to European films imported into the US (…) Ultimately, the conclusion that Hollywood’s film dominance has been the product of economic and political maneuvering on a Machiavellian scale is inescapable (…) The dominance of American films has very little to do with aesthetics and consumer preference and a great deal to do with politics and greed (…) Hollywood’s position must be considered the result of manipulation of the international political economy involving the interplay of economics and politics in the world arena.[5]

And since “the archive of MPPDA’s foreign office has never been available to researchers[6]”, some mystery remains.

However, there is always a blank in most of the literature on the subject, and it concerns the American domestic market itself: it is very rarely mentioned that it is not very much open – to say the least – to foreign movies, whatever they are and wherever they come from. I contacted the Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA) to have some statistics, and they were unable to provide them for they do not have such statistics. Uff-Moller puts forward the number of 0,25% of the representation of foreign movies in the United States[7]. Montazani states that, because foreign movies are mostly distributed by independent distributors (more than 80% in 1998 and 1999), they are broadcast on fewer than 100 screens (94 out of 37185 in 1999)[8]! He concludes that

European movies only have a small market share in the United States. The market is indeed dominated by the domestic blockbusters, distributed by the majors and broadcast in most of the movie theaters. Specialty cinemas [most of them are situated in New York and Washington states and in California] and non-theatrical theaters [in universities and museums, most of the time] are the only broadcasting space for European movies.[9]

The European Union buys American films and audiovisual products twelve times more than it sells to the United States. 70% of films and audiovisual products broadcast in Europe are American; the opposite is less than 1%.[10] Therefore when Americans criticize “protectionist France”, as it is always dubbed in the press, it is the pot that calls the kettle black! For there is indeed here a paradox: there is no denying in the fact that the United States is made up of a cosmopolitan population which, as a UCLA professor I had was saying, is “the great strength of this country”, echoing very much Hays’ ideas:

There is a special reason why America should have given birth and prosperous nurture to the motion picture and its world-wide entertainment. America in the very literal sense is truly the world state. All races, all creeds, all men are to be found here…[11]

That may be one of the reasons explaining the so-called universality contains in American films. But why is the opposite untrue? Being from all around the world, the American population would logically be receptive of other cultures, wouldn’t they? To this question, the professor replied “American film dominates because it is the best written and otherwise crafted.” Quite frankly, I was bewildered by such a concise answer, an answer that is not even backed up by any arguments. True it is Americans make great movies, but not always – there are really bad ones coming from Hollywood. And I was surprised that such a respected professor totally left in the dark the hermetic system mentioned earlier. Despite the booming and blossoming of independent movies in the United States, it is really hard for any independent producer to make his/her movie. And when it comes to foreign films, it is quite the same. Would we go as far as saying that the American population, allegedly put off by subtitles and a culture that is too alien to his/hers, is not willing to see foreign movies? I don’t think so. During my research, I discovered that many people wanted to be offered a much larger choice, a choice that they currently do not have, even in big cities such as Los Angeles – many people told me that it was hard to find a foreign film either in a movie theater or at a video rental store. The demand does exist but nothing is done to satisfy it – it is thus stifled by the big machine that is Hollywood which dominates the national market, and if it seems legitimate to some to know the ethnicity of every inhabitant, it is unnecessary to know the percentage of foreign films broadcast in the United States. The demand is not supported by the supply, that is why it does not seem to be high, and this goes hand in hand with the very poor quality of the coverage of foreign news on television.

Les Etatsuniens et le monde

Bon, c'est un stéréotype - les Etatsuniens ne sont pas (vraiment pas) bons en géographie pour la simple raison que cette matière n'est pas enseignée à l'école; de là à dire que c'est pour ça qu'ils se prennent pour le centre du monde, il y a un pas... que je ne franchirai pas. Mais il est vrai que les informations à la télévision sont vraiment d'une piètre qualité car (1) très peu de reportages sur l'actualité internationale et (2) concentration sur le fait divers et le sensationnel - on reste dans la société du spectacle...

Je me souviens encore d'un reportage sur les émeutes dans les banlieues fin 2005, où ils montraient une carte de France avec les grandes villes... presque toutes mal placées (même Paris, si chère aux Etatsuniens !)

Certaines entrevues dans cette vidéo ont été faites à Venice Beach (j'ai reconnu les palmiers et l'environnement !). Je vous rassure, les gens très cultivés existent aussi ici...

Quelques particularités bien d'ici:

beaucoup de gens ont avec eux un tube d'une crème ou plutôt d'un liquide bien particulier: un anti-bactérien qui hydrate votre peau en même temps qu'il joue son rôle hygiénique (Hand Sanitizer with Moisturizer and Vitamin E). En gros, c'est un peu comme ces mini-serviettes rafraîchissantes qu'on vous donne dans l'avion. Y'en a même au Centre de l'Homme et de la Femme (oui oui, j'y vais, non pour les discussions mais pour imprimer car c'est gratuit !). Du coup, avant de partir, je me plais à presser le tube et à faire comme tout le monde fait ici, histoire d'avoir des mains propres et fraîches !
Qu'est-ce qu'un(e) date ? C'est la catégorie avant petit(e) ami(e). Si quelqu'un te plaît, tu peux sortir avec, et ce sans engagement. Du coup, il y a des gens qui cumulent les dates, c'est-à-dire qu'ils/elles sortent avec plusieurs personnes à la fois (pas en même tems, quoique...). Pour officialiser la relation, il doit avoir LA discussion qui établit, d'un commun accord, que tu es mon/ma petit(e) ami(e). Quant à savoir si le sexe est permis avec un(e) date, j'ai cru que comprendre que oui...
Un peu de lingustique anglaise: depuis le geste malheureux de notre Zidane national lors de la dernière Coupe du Monde de football, la langue anglaise s'est enrichie d'un verbe - to zidane (someone). Si quelqu'un vous lance, les yeux acerbes, "I'm gonna zidane you!", je vous conseille de prendre les jambes à votre cou ! L'anglais a cette flexibilité que j'adore... Sinon, l'autre jour, je marchais tranquillement quand mes oreilles ont capté une conversation que tenait une jeune fille au téléphone: elle était en train de laisser un message sur la boîte vocale de son ami(e). Elle a dit "call me back asap" (abbréviation de "as soon as possible" prononcée /eizap/), et d'ajouter, avant de raccrocher "P.S..." C'est donc un fait, quand on parle, on tend à vouloir raccourcir les choses (c'est le côté paresseux de l'être humain, pensez au "je ne sais pas" qui devient "je sais pas" qui devient "chè pas"). Les moyens de communication s'entrelacent, mais tant qu'on ne se met pas à dire lol en pleine conversation... Quoiqu'il soit avéré que les jeunes étatsuniens le font; d'ailleurs, au lieu de dire "oh my God", ils vont s'exclamer "omg"

La question juive

Il y a quelque chose d'intriguant ici. Je ne sais pas si c'est spécifique à Los Angeles ou mon environnement particulier, mais le mot "juif" semble revenir constamment dans les conversations.

Ce matin, en cours de télévision étatsunienne, le prof - juif déclaré - a comme souvent mentionné cette question. La représentation juive à l'écran et en coulisses. Ca revient constamment. Je surprends des bribes de conversations et j'entends le mot "juif". Je connais des gens qui ont un nombre impressionnant de blagues sur les juifs.

Je ne comprends pas. Pourquoi se focaliser là-dessus ? C'est étrange, j'ai même du mal à m'exprimer. Est-ce que nous, en France, on va mentioner la religion d'un présentateur télé ? Non. Le problème de la représentation en France dans les médias concerne les noirs et les beurs. Ici, toutes les minorités ont leur mots à dire, et c'est tant mieux, vu que les lobbys poussent les réseaux télé à inclure la diversité de la population dans les séries. Alors le prof nous dit qu'il trouvait étrange que dans Sex and the City, qui se déroule à New York, qu'il n'y ait pas de personnage juif, alors même que l'actrice principale et le producteur le sont. On est tout de même à New York !

Tout Français que je suis, je me suis fait la remarque: et alors ? Du coup, je me dis que cette idée du melting pot étatsunien n'est vraiment qu'un mythe. Faire de tous les citoyens des Etatsuniens mais qu'ils conservent leurs traits d'identité. Et quand Edouard Said dit que l'Orientalisme (= la fausse conception des Arabes au sens large et de l'Arabie par les Occidentaux) est très complexe aux Etats-Unis vu leur soutien inconditionel à Israël, eh bien je ne peux qu'être d'accord.

Représenter les gens de couleur et les minorités sexuelles, je dis oui haut et fort et je défends grandement l'idée, dans la mesure où on ne choisit pas la couleur de sa peau ou son orientation sexuelle. Mais la religion, même si imposée à la naissance, peut être changée et l'individu peut avoir une réflexion là-dessus, quand bien même il/elle est né(e) chrétien, juif, musulman ou autre. Une fois mature, il/elle peut continuer consciemment ou alors changer.

Alors oui, la France est laïque, on sépare l'Eglise et l'Etat malgré quelques ratés (dernier cas en date, toutes les religions qui s'associent pour contrer le mariage et l'adoption des couples de même sexe. Si l'Etat les écoute, on va finir comme les Etats-Unis où la religion est partout dans la vie quotidienne, même si l'Eglise et l'Etat sont théoriquement séparés, ici aussi). C'est peut-être pour ça que je réagis comme ça et que je suis quelque peu intrigué et surpris par cette dominance du mot "juif" dans les discours. J'ai du mal à saisir, même si je sais que c'est affaire de culture...

Je sais aussi que je n'aime pas les catégories, quelles qu'elles soient. Pourquoi bloquer sur quelqu'un parce qu'il est juif, noir, gay, blond ou autre ? J'ai court-circuité - ou du moins, je fais mon possible - tout jugement quant à l'apparence de quelqu'un; j'essaie de faire fi de tout préjugé... Qu'on explique telle série ou telle oeuvre en prenant une certaine perspective, je veux bien, mais qu'on la réduise à ça, non. Il est évident que le fait de ne pas avoir de juif dans Sex and the City n'est pour moi pas un problème car je ne suis pas Etatsunien. Un juif de France ne sera pas gêné non plus, je pense. Ici, on dirait que ça fait jaser...

Si quelqu'un veut partager ses idées, je suis tout ouïe.

Les Etatsuniens et la nourriture

Plus je vis ici, plus je me rends compte combien il est meilleur de vivre en Europe, en ce qui concerne la nourriture.

Sachez qu'ici, il existe ce que j'appelle la nourriture 'normale' et la nourriture bio. Par nourriture 'normale', il faut comprendre que les aliments sont génétiquement modifiés et bourrés d'hormones. Oui, oui, c'est affreux mais c'est comme ça que ça se passe ici; ça explique que les Etats-Unis soient le premier exportateur agricole... Quant à la nourriture bio, c'est notre nourriture normale en Europe. Alors évidemment, la nourriture normale coûte sensiblement moins cher que le bio.

C'est hallucinant ce qu'ils mettent dans la nourriture. Les effets font froids dans le dos: une pomme peut rester sans pourrir plus d'un mois; les légumes peuvent rester verts pendant super longtemps... Oh my God, comme on dit ! J'ai découvert que même le lait est modifié, dans le sens où ils droguent la vache pour qu'elle ait l'impression d'être enceinte et du coup qu'elle produise du lait sans arrêt (une vache ne commence à produire du lait qu'à partir de 70kg et ensuite, après chaque repas). Beaucoup d'eaux sont en fait minéralisées ici, c'est-à-dire qu'ils rajoutent des minéraux car ce n'est pas de l'eau minérale au départ. Evian, marque française très chic, coûte la peau des fesses ici... Alors on se retrouve avec du jus d'orange qui contient 240% de vitamine C. Ils ne semblent pas comprendre ici que le corps élimine le surplus... Ils sont censés être à la pointe de la recherche...

Savez-vous quels sont les trois publicités qui passent le plus souvent à la télévision étatsunienne (et Dieu qu'elle en est saturée, c'est une horreur inregardable !) ? Les pubs pour assurances, voitures et malbouffe. Si, si; même à la gym, alors que tu cours sur ton tapis, t'as devant toi la télé qui te montre avec ostentation un hamburger bien gras...

Il n'y a aucune politique de santé publique. Dans les trois quarts des petits restaurants, tu as le droit à un nombre illimité de refill. Soda à volonté, frites à volonté parfois... Et après on s'étonne que la population étatsunienne est pleine d'obèses...

Ca m'étonne de la Californie. Après tout, c'est le culte du corps... Certes, je ne vois que très rarement des gens à la charge pondérale surchargée et le bio est un vrai mode de vie ici, mais il n'en reste pas moins que les gens mangent mal ici. Et moi aussi d'ailleurs ! Malgré le sport que je fais, mes montées et descentes du campus, le bannissement du sucre facile, je sais que j'ai dû prendre quelques grammes, voire quelques kilos. Tout ça parce qu'ils mettent une tonne de conservateurs, de pesticides et d'hormones dans tout et n'importe quoi. Mon médecin m'avait prévenu... J'ai hâte de monter sur une balance et de voir le résultat. Ca ne sera pas catastrophique, je ne suis pas alarmiste, et je sais que je les perdrai, mais bon...

En espérant que l'Europe conserve le monopole du goût et du bon manger !

Cette 79ème cérémonie des Oscars, présentée par la talentueuse et spirituelle Ellen DeGeneres - assez inconnue de notre côté de l'Atlantique mais véritable star ici -, avait la particularité de mettre en lumière l'internationalisation du cinéma. Et la presse n'a eu de cesse de le faire remarquer, certains journalistes allant jusqu'à demander l'abrogation de la catégorie "meilleur film en langue étrangère" qui ne semble plus avoir de raison d'être.

Je ne sais pas si c'est parce que je suis à Los Angeles, capitale mondiale du divertissement, mais autour de moi, la communauté estudiantine était en ébullution le weekend dernier. Les Oscars, c'était LE sujet de toutes les conversations. Qui va gagner ? Les jeunes ont coutume de se réunir chez quelqu'un pour regarder la Cérémonie et même faire des paris ! C'est un sujet incontournable et je n'ai pas été surpris quand mon prof de télévision est revenu là-dessus en début de cours.

Autant on peut critiquer le côté trop "divertissant" du cinéma étatsunien [forme basse de culture] (je dis ça avec plein de guillemets, tout le monde n'est pas à mettre dans le même panier !), autant on peut dire que malgré tout, ça fait partie intégrante de la société étatsunienne et que les gens discutent de films de façon assez profondes, d'après ce que j'ai pu constater, et ce à tous les niveaux: photographie, acteurs, écriture, plans...

La traduction des titres des films me surprend toujours autant ! J'ai hâte de rentrer dans le milieu et de changer les choses !

La téléphonie mobile chez l'Oncle Sam

En France, on se plaint souvent de nos trois opérateurs qui passent des accords secrets pour concurrence illicite, et le consommateur français se plaint souvent de petits trucs qui dérangent, comme le manque de réseau, les prix élevés et caetera et caetera...

Eh bien moi je vous dis, estimez-vous heureux (you can count your lucky stars) parce que la situation outre-Atlantique, c'est du grand n'importe quoi !

J'avais le choix entre Verizon, opérateur avec le plus grand réseau d'après ce qu'on m'a dit, Cingular, pas loin derrière, T-Mobile et d'autres petits qui essayent de jouer dans la cour des grands. Je me souviens qu'à mon arrivée, mon réseau Bouygues Telecom me connectait à USA 17 et Cingular, alors j'ai opté pour Cingular, d'autant que "the French community" comme j'aime à l'appeler, est en majorité sur Cingular et l'avantage, c'est que passer un coup de fil de Cingular à Cingular, c'est gratuit.

Comme je l'ai dit dans un précédent article, je suis en Pay-As-You-Go, c'est-à-dire que j'ai un crédit valable pour une certaine durée. Dans la mesure où je ne téléphone pas souvent, qu'on ne m'appelle pas souvent, cette solution me parait être la meilleure. Il faut savoir que j'ai un crédit de 15 dollars pour une durée d'un mois, et qu'un dollar m'est débité par jour si j'utilise mon téléphone. Mais qu'est-ce que ça veut dire utiliser mon téléphone? Eh bien, ça veut dire quand j'appelle ou quand on m'appelle. Ce qui revient à dire que je ne peux utiliser mon téléphone que 15 fois dans le mois qui m'est alloué, seulement sur Cingular !

L'envoi et la réception d'un sms me coûte 5 cents. Mais bien sûr, je paie si le réseau récepteur est autre... Et la consultation de la boîte vocale est aussi payante et j'ai eu le malheur de ne pas effacer mes messages après les avoir écouter. Grosse erreur ! Car y'a quelques jours, on m'a laissé un message et quand j'ai appelé ma messagerie, la dame de Cingular m'a fait réécouter tous mes messages non effacés, datant du mois d'octobre... et impossible d'appuyer sur la touche pour effacer le message en cours d'écoute: il faut attendre la fin et que madame Cingular te dise "pour effacer ce message, taper sur la touche X" !!!

Même si j'ai souvent le plus fort signal, quand je décroche pour répondre, il faut souvent que je répète deux ou trois fois "hello" pour que la personne au bout du fil m'entende... C'est vraiment pas top !

Alors bon, autant que faire se peut, je fonctionne avec les emails par ordi, quand rien n'est urgent, voire Facebook, ou sinon, vu qu'il est gratuit d'appeler des lignes fixes et mobiles au Etats-Unis via Skype jusqu'à fin décembre, j'utilise ce petit logiciel. C'est bon pour moi, mais celui/celle que j'appelle paie la communication...

En gros, ici, c'est pas terrible niveau téléphone mobile...
